In 2004, Wangari Maathai (b. 1940 – d. 2011), an environmentalist and women’s rights advocate because the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for “her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.” It is said that Ms. Maathai planted 30 million trees across Africa to help protect the environment. This photo which I recently came across again (and again and again and again — okay, I get it Universe! Published! Done!) jarred my memory and I thought Ms Maathai or her trusty assistant must have spent a lot of time counting trees. Something we should all do — count our trees and their many blessings.
